DEFENDANT EXPRESSES CONCERN FOR OWN SAFETY

By Kevin Dayhoff

Westminster — In a hearing held Thursday morning in Carroll County District Court, visiting Judge Paula J. Brown ordered Anthony Troy Soligny held in the Carroll County Detention Center without bail.

Soligny, 33, is accused of attempted murder for allegedly attacking his wife with a hammer.

Brown noted that Soligny is accused of a violent crime and agreed with the assistant state’s attorney, Tae Yee, that Soligny is “a serious flight risk.”

Maryland State Police say Soligny allegedly assaulted his wife with a steel and rubber hammer on March 2. At about 11:30 p.m. that day, state police at the Westminster Barracks received a 911 call from his wife.

Troopers discovered that she had sustained what appeared to be severe blunt-force-trauma injuries to her head and hand. She was transported to University of Maryland Hospital's Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

After the alleged assault, Soligny fled the state but was arrested the next day while traveling on Rte. I-85 just outside Lavonia, Ga. He was subsequently locked up in the Franklin County Detention Center in Carnesville, Ga., until Maryland State Police returned him to Carroll County Tuesday.

Brown further ordered that Soligny have no contact with the alleged victim and that he be given a psychiatric evaluation.

When the judge asked the defendant if he understood the charges, Soligny answered only, “Yes.”

Asked if he had any questions, Soligny responded, “No one is going to hurt me here?”
